The report suggests that the 84-year-old Democrat is likely to secure reelection in California’s 11th Congressional District, which encompasses much of San Francisco. This news follows the counting of 50% of the votes, with Pelosi attaining over 80%.
Having first entered Congress in 1987, Pelosi made history as the first woman to serve as House speaker, a position she has held twice. Furthermore, she is recognized as the longest-serving leader of the Democratic Party in Congress.
Pelosi previously urged incumbent President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, a move that resulted in Biden stepping down as the Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris taking his place.
As final votes are counted in the presidential election, official results remain pending. However, projections indicate that Trump has achieved victories in crucial battleground states and has surpassed the 270 electoral college votes needed to claim the presidency.
Pelosi stands as one of Trump’s most vocal adversaries. She has labeled him a “snake-oil salesman” and “the creature from the Black Lagoon,” and has spearheaded Democratic efforts during the impeachment proceedings against him in his earlier term. Discussing her latest book this August, she stated that her “goal in life” was for Trump to “never step in the White House again.”
In his campaign's closing address on Tuesday, Trump criticized Pelosi, recalling her impeachment efforts. He described her as an “evil, sick, crazy, horrible human being” and “trouble for our country,” expressing his desire to refer to her in a derogatory manner. During a Fox News interview last month, he referred to her as America’s “enemy from within.”
Recent media reports indicate that Republicans have regained control of the Senate for the first time in four years. The status of control over the House of Representatives remains uncertain, with numerous races still to be determined.
