Earlier this month, Borisov received a nomination for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award in the same category.
The announcement was made during the 97th Oscars Nominations Announcement on Thursday. Borisov is competing against fellow nominees such as Kieran Culkin for his role in ‘A Real Pain,’ Edward Norton for ‘A Complete Unknown,’ Guy Pearce for ‘The Brutalist,’ and Jeremy Strong for ‘The Apprentice.’
‘Anora’ tells the love story of a Brooklyn sex worker named Anora and the son of a Russian oligarch. Following their marriage, the groom’s family attempts to tear them apart. Borisov portrays Igor, a henchman for the groom’s family.
The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May, where it won the coveted Palme d’Or.
In comments to Variety, Baker expressed that Borisov was an ideal fit for the character, noting the film's theme of “setting up stereotypes and then shattering them.” He required a henchman with a softer side, describing Borisov as “a teddy bear” underneath. “His performances had that sensitivity, a lot of that emotion going on behind his outer shell,” Baker elaborated, referring to Borisov as a “genius.” Notably, ‘Anora’ marks Borisov's first foray into an English-language film.
When filming commenced in Brooklyn in 2023, Borisov arrived from Moscow with some trepidation, as this was his first experience on an American project. “I didn’t know Sean as a person. I didn’t know [actress] Mikey [Madison, who plays Anora]. I didn’t know what was different about the American process. But I quickly learned that it’s absolutely the same everywhere,” he shared with The Hollywood Reporter in December.
Borisov, who hails from Moscow, graduated from the Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theater School in 2013 and began his film acting career in 2010. Throughout his career, he has appeared in nearly two dozen films, primarily in Russia. He won Russia’s Golden Eagle Award for Best Leading Actor in 2021 for his role in ‘The Bull’ and was nominated for Best Actor at the European Film Awards for his part in the Finnish film ‘Compartment No. 6.’
Additionally, in December, Borisov received a Golden Globe nomination for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role,’ although Kieran Culkin took home the award for his role in ‘A Real Pain.’
‘Anora’ has earned a total of six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Directing, Writing, and Film Editing.
The winners of the 2025 Academy Awards will be revealed during a ceremony scheduled for March 2 in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
