A former employee of OpenAI, Balaji had accused the company of breaching copyright laws during the development of its ChatGPT chatbot. His death has been covered by CNBC and other outlets.
David Serrano Sewell, executive director of San Francisco’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, stated on Friday that “the manner of death has been determined to be suicide.”
Officers from the San Francisco police discovered Balaji’s body during a “wellbeing check” at his apartment on Buchanan Street on November 26. Authorities reported that there was “no evidence of foul play” found in the early stages of the investigation.
Balaji's death occurred three months after he publicly alleged that OpenAI had violated U.S. copyright law while working on the ChatGPT large language model. His information was thought to be significant for various lawsuits filed against the San Francisco-based company by publishers, authors, and artists, who claim that OpenAI utilized their data without permission.
When asked for a statement, a spokesperson for OpenAI expressed, “we are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today and our hearts go out to Suchir’s loved ones during this difficult time.”
