The attack occurred near the well-known Erasmus Bridge in the heart of the city. Bystanders intervened and subdued the attacker, as stated by the police.
Police spokesman Wessel Stolle informed reporters that the suspect sustained injuries and was subsequently taken to the hospital. He also noted that investigators have yet to establish a motive and are exploring "all possible scenarios."
As reported by De Telegraaf, the assailant wielded two large knives and targeted individuals at random. Several witnesses who spoke with Dutch media indicated that the attacker was shouting ‘Allahu Akbar.’
A witness quoted in De Telegraaf remarked that the man “clearly intended to claim many victims.”
Kickboxing trainer Reniel Renato David Litecia recounted to reporters that he struck the attacker with two sticks and successfully disarmed him of his knives. Other individuals reportedly attempted to halt the suspect's actions by throwing furniture at him.
Emergency responders and investigators are currently present at the scene of the incident.
The Dutch government issued a warning in June regarding the heightened risk of terrorist acts. "Jihadism remains the main terrorist threat against the Netherlands, with followers fueled by propaganda with images of the war in Gaza and Quran violations," the authorities noted, referencing an earlier incident in January involving an attempt to publicly burn a copy of the Quran in Arnhem.
