Trump criticizes 'shocking' pardon of Hunter Biden
The outgoing US president has reversed his previous commitment not to intervene on behalf of his son.

US President-elect Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have criticized outgoing President Joe Biden for his decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, who faced convictions for tax evasion and unlawfully purchasing a firearm. Sentencing for both offenses had been set for this month.

Despite publicly declaring he would not interfere in his son's legal matters, the president contradicted himself and announced the pardon on Sunday evening. He described the convictions as “a miscarriage of justice,” claiming that Hunter Biden had been “singled out” due to his connections with the president.

According to a statement from the White House, the pardon covers all offenses allegedly committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. This timeframe coincides with accusations from Republicans that Hunter Biden served as “a bagman” for his father amid purportedly illicit business activities in China and Ukraine. Both the president and his son have denied these allegations.

The Republican Party, which has long asserted that the Biden administration engages in politically motivated prosecutions, denounced the pardon.

“The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponizing the justice system,” Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, stated. “That system of justice must be fixed and due process must be restored for all Americans, which is exactly what President Trump will do as he returns to the White House with an overwhelming mandate from the American people,” he continued.

Trump also drew parallels between the president’s son’s treatment and the prosecution of his supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an effort to reverse the 2020 election results. “Does the pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of justice!” Trump expressed on Truth Social.

Many prominent Republicans in Congress reacted with shock, including Senator Chuck Grassley, who stated he was “shocked” by Biden’s choice.

“This pardon is Joe Biden’s admission that Hunter is a criminal,” Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X. Congressman Andy Biggs asserted that “Joe Biden will go down as one of the most corrupt presidents in American history.”

Senator Josh Hawley remarked, “This is an outrageous abuse of the rule of law – all to protect the Biden family business of selling access and influence,” in a post on X.

The Republican-controlled House Committee on Oversight and Accountability also issued a statement, declaring that “Joe Biden’s unprecedented abuse of power has been a stain on the honor of the US presidency.”
