The 75-year-old leader was recently diagnosed with a urinary tract infection linked to benign prostate enlargement and underwent a prostatectomy on Sunday.
“The surgery ended successfully without complications,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement, as quoted by the news outlet. “The prime minister has woken up, is in good condition and is completely conscious.”
Netanyahu has been moved to a fortified underground hospital ward in Jerusalem due to concerns that he could be a target of rocket or missile fire amid the ongoing conflict, according to the report.
The Haaretz newspaper revealed that Netanyahu has reportedly dealt with an enlarged prostate for more than ten years and had undergone treatment back in 2014. These procedures, which were concealed from the public for nearly a year, involved nighttime hospital visits under elaborate disguises, including decoy vehicles designed to resemble a pita-bread delivery truck and a pest exterminator’s van.
Netanyahu was scheduled to testify in court last week for his corruption trial, but the hearing was cancelled due to his surgery, as noted by Haaretz. A new date for the hearing has not yet been established.
In 2019, Netanyahu faced charges including fraud, bribery, and breach of trust across three separate cases. The trial, which began in May 2020, has experienced multiple delays, first because of the Covid-19 pandemic and more recently due to Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza.
Netanyahu has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the charges against him are part of a politically motivated witch hunt aimed at ousting him from office.
