Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was officially arrested on Sunday due to corruption charges, as reported by the Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency.

The accusations against Imamoglu include "bribery, corruption, qualified fraud, illegally obtaining personal data for profit and tampering with a tender," the agency stated.

Imamoglu had been in police custody at the Istanbul Police Headquarters since his detention on Wednesday, undergoing interrogation related to two investigations focused on terrorism and corruption.

After his interrogation was completed, he was taken under heavy police presence to the main courthouse at approximately 7 p.m. local time on Saturday for further legal proceedings. The mayor has denied all allegations against him.

He was released under judicial control concerning the terrorism investigation, where he is accused of aiding and assisting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, designated a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the European Union, and the United States.

In February, Imamoglu submitted his application to the Republican People's Party to stand as a presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.

The CHP plans to officially nominate Imamoglu as its presidential candidate after a vote by party members, which started at 8 a.m. local time and is scheduled to conclude at 5 p.m. local time on Sunday.

Imamoglu was re-elected for a second term as mayor of Istanbul, Türkiye's largest city, following his significant victory in the local elections held in 2024 against Murat Kurum, a candidate from the ruling Justice and Development Party.
