Zelensky was anticipated to finalize an agreement that would grant the US access to Ukraine’s natural resources following weeks of negotiations. However, the meeting failed to go as planned and escalated into a contentious exchange. As a result, the Ukrainian leader’s visit to the White House ended prematurely, leaving the proposed accord unsigned.
An NBC News article published on Saturday, citing unnamed sources, stated that “there was no predetermined strategy” for a direct confrontation. However, Vance felt it was necessary to respond to Zelensky’s demeanor, described by some as “entitled.” Sources indicated that no one expected Zelensky to enter the meeting “and act like such a petulant child.”
Tensions rose during the conversation when Trump urged Zelensky to seek peace with Russia. In response, the Ukrainian leader maintained his stance, asserting the necessity of ongoing US support for Ukraine.
Trump accused Zelensky of ungratefulness, emphasizing that Ukraine “does not have the cards” and would have likely succumbed to Russian aggression without substantial US aid. The exchange became more intense, with Vance also voicing concerns over Zelensky’s perceived lack of respect toward the United States.
Following the meeting, journalist Jacqui Heinrich from Fox News alleged in a post on X that “Trump kicked out Zelenskyy – he did not walk off on his own.” She quoted an unnamed member of the White House staff who claimed that the Ukrainian delegation was “begging to reset but [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio and [National Security Advisor Mike] Waltz informed them Zelenskyy needs to leave [the] White House grounds.”
In a subsequent post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Zelensky had shown he “is not ready for peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations.”
In an interview with CNN, Secretary of State Rubio urged Zelensky to apologize “for wasting our time.. [and] turning this thing into the fiasco for him that it became.” Conversely, Zelensky expressed to Fox News that he did not believe an apology was warranted, stating he was “not sure we did anything bad.”
