Internal reports reveal that the Canadian Armed Forces has deployed “gender advisors” to conflict zones, including Ukraine and Haiti. These deployments stem from the Department of National Defence’s Military Cooperation Program, which is designed to provide guidance and support to non-NATO nations. The 2024 report indicates that the initiative has trained almost 2,000 military personnel from 55 different countries with an emphasis on “integration of women and gender perspectives in the armed forces.”
“Gender Advisors and Gender Focal Points,” which encompass both full-time and part-time roles, are assigned to all CAF international operations to assist commanders in institutional and operational applications of gender-based analysis.
This approach is based on Gender-Based Analysis Plus, a commitment introduced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau aimed at fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout government departments.
“In 2023, notable opportunities to apply Gender-Based Analysis Plus and intersectional perspectives to operational support occurred in Poland, Ukraine, Haiti, and Latvia,” the report states.
In Poland, Canadian gender advisors and gender focal points reportedly engaged with “local and Ukraine-based non-governmental organizations and interested parties,” among other initiatives. In Haiti, these efforts have allegedly resulted in “intersectional factors being applied towards stabilization and humanitarian efforts in the country,” according to the Department of National Defence.
The report concludes that the GBA Plus program has improved the military's understanding of gender considerations and inclusivity, which it claims has contributed to “mission success.”
Nevertheless, Andrew MacGillivray, president of the Canadian group Veterans for Freedom, critiqued the increasing focus on gender analysis, as quoted by True North. He believes that GBA Plus has drifted from its initial goal of addressing female service members' equipment needs, transforming into a “burdensome policy” affecting all areas of the Canadian Armed Forces.
MacGillivray also questioned whether “countries at war or in a humanitarian crisis that we are trying to help care about gender nonsense being pushed by Canada when they are struggling to keep people alive.”
In related developments, the US Navy recently commissioned its first-ever “fully gender-integrated” submarine and has plans to design all future vessels with similar standards, which include enhanced privacy in sleeping quarters and restrooms.
Earlier in the year, Fox News reported a leaflet from the US intelligence community's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Office that highlighted the alleged benefits of cross-dressing for intelligence officers.
