Entrepreneur and Trump supporter Elon Musk has proposed that the US consider implementing mandatory mental fitness tests for public officials. This suggestion follows news about an 81-year-old congresswoman who was initially feared to be missing but was actually residing in a nursing home for dementia patients.
The controversy unfolded this week when local media revealed that Kay Granger, a Republican congresswoman from Texas who has served in the House of Representatives for nearly three decades, had not been seen at her office for the past six months, with her staff completely out of reach. Employees at a dementia care assisted living facility confirmed Granger's residence there, according to The Dallas Express on Friday.
Upon further investigation, it was confirmed that Granger was indeed a resident of the Fort Worth facility that specializes in treating individuals with dementia. Last October, the congresswoman announced her decision not to seek re-election, with her term set to end in January.
In response to the reports on Sunday, Musk suggested on X: “Maybe we should have some basic cognitive test for elected officials? This is getting crazy.”
The billionaire has also previously advocated for an age limit for those in public office, contending that the lack of change in political leadership “inhibits the new ideas.”
The debate over whether US officials should be required to undergo mandatory cognitive tests has gained traction in the political arena, particularly during the recent election cycle which featured incumbent Joe Biden, 82, and current President-elect Donald Trump, 78. Biden was compelled to exit the election after a troubling debate performance that highlighted concerns about his mental fitness.
