The owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and X shared an excerpt from a Russian news segment regarding the delegation's arrival, which was led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Riyadh. Musk noted on X, “This is what competent leadership looks like.”
In a video that Musk shared, journalist Yevgeny Popov interviewed Yury Ushakov, President Vladimir Putin’s chief foreign policy aide, about the atmosphere leading up to the talks scheduled for Tuesday local time. Ushakov responded, “We will see. The most important thing right now is to begin a real normalization of relations between us and Washington.”
Musk, who contributed 20,000 Starlink internet terminals to Ukraine in 2022, has since advocated for de-escalation between Russia and the US, stating, “We are sleepwalking our way into World War III with one foolish decision after the other.”
The upcoming meeting will mark the first in-person US-Russian discussions since Russia initiated its military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
As the Biden administration has focused on “isolating” Russia globally, Trump has pledged to swiftly mediate a conclusive end to the conflict, criticizing his predecessor for sidelining diplomacy in favor of unconditional military assistance to Ukraine. Putin remarked last year that the efforts to isolate Russia “has failed,” citing strengthened ties with significant economies beyond Europe and North America, including China, India, and Brazil.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday and is expected to engage with Lavrov as well.
Trump engaged in a phone conversation with Putin on February 12, which drew frustration from Ukraine’s EU allies, who felt sidelined by the dialogue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Kiev will “not recognize” any negotiations that occur without his approval. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that his government faces a “low chance” of success without American support.
