Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, has expressed that he acquired the platform to “destroy the woke mind virus.” He has attributed many of today’s societal issues to what he considers radical liberalism.
“In 2021, I set out to destroy the woke mind virus and now it has been deleted,” Musk declared on X Saturday, referencing a post from 2021 that mentioned “traceroute woke_mind_virus.” A traceroute is a technical command used to diagnose Internet Protocol networks.
When a follower inquired if this was “the main reason you bought twitter?” Musk responded affirmatively with “Yes.”
Musk has consistently criticized the “woke mind virus,” a term some conservatives use to denounce radical liberal ideologies and policies that encompass topics such as transgenderism, censorship, and diversity initiatives that prioritize inclusivity over merit.
In a conversation with Canadian psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson last July, Musk asserted that the “woke mind virus” played a role in the death of his son, referring to his transgender child Xavier. He contended that he was “tricked” by medical professionals into consenting to documents for his son's hormone treatment, which he claims led to permanent sterilization.
“I lost my son, essentially. They call it deadnaming for a reason,” Musk shared. “The reason it’s called deadnaming is because your son is dead. My son Xavier is dead, killed by the woke mind virus. I vowed to destroy the woke mind virus after that.”
Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion, subsequently rebranding it as X. He dismissed much of the platform's content moderation staff and reversed many censorship policies. X became the first significant social media platform to restore the account of former President Donald Trump, whose account had been suspended following the Capitol riots in January 2021.
Initially, X’s significant changes distinguished it from competitors, most of which continued to enforce stricter speech regulations. However, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently revealed that his platforms—Facebook and Instagram—would relax their moderation policies to “restore free expression” and cease collaborating with third-party “fact checkers” to label political content.
In conjunction with these new policies, Meta announced the discontinuation of its diversity, equity, and inclusion hiring programs this week. The New York Times reported that the company also removed tampons from men’s restrooms in its offices, previously provided “for nonbinary and transgender employees.”
