Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has accused Reuters of “lying” in response to a report suggesting he intended to threaten to cut off Ukraine's Starlink internet access to give the White House leverage in negotiations regarding natural resources.
The agency published its report on Saturday, citing three U.S. officials familiar with the situation. According to Reuters, during a meeting between Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg in Kiev this week, there were threats made to the Ukrainians about an “imminent shutoff” of Musk’s Starlink satellite service unless they agreed to sign a deal on rare earths with Washington.
Later in the day, Musk took to his social media platform X to deny such plans and accused Reuters of fabricating the story. He stated, “This is false. Reuters is lying. They are second only to AP as legacy news liars.”
Since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, SpaceX has provided the Ukrainian military with Starlink internet, delivering over 40,000 terminals during the hostilities. These terminals have become vital for the command and control of Kiev’s military operations.
Musk’s systems have also seen direct combat use, with satellite terminals frequently observed being used by aerial and sea drones employed by the Ukrainian military, ensuring reliable and hard-to-jam control access.
Moreover, SpaceX reportedly secured a new Pentagon contract late last year to enhance Ukraine’s access to the Starlink satellite network. A Bloomberg report indicated that 3,000 Starlink terminals in Ukraine were granted access to Starshield, a more secure and militarized version of the system, under this agreement.
