Moscow says Russia and US are ‘united’ in condemning Syria's mass murders
Clashes in Syria have resulted in the brutal killings of ethnoreligious minorities labeled as ‘pro-Assad elements’ by the EU.

Russia and the US are in communication regarding the escalating situation in Syria, according to Moscow’s UN ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia. Reports indicate that hundreds of civilians have died in renewed fighting in the country over the past few days.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Nebenzia noted that all members of the UN Security Council share concern over the worsening conditions in the region, stating that Moscow and Washington are engaged in discussions on the matter.

“The council was united in what we discussed today, everyone spoke out. I wouldn’t say with one voice, but everyone emphasized the same elements: the inadmissibility of what happened, the mass murders, and violence,” Nebenzia remarked.

Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed Moscow’s worry about the rising violence in Syria, calling for immediate action. “Many nations and international organizations, including the UN, share our concern,” Peskov stated.

The Syrian government collapsed in late 2024 when militant forces opposed to then-President Bashar Assad executed a surprise offensive, seizing control of Damascus within days. The national military disintegrated during this attack, leading to the establishment of new security forces made up of various former jihadist groups.

Last week saw a decline in stability in coastal Syria, with clashes occurring between the new security forces and local militias characterized by Western media as Assad loyalists. The violence has predominantly affected areas inhabited by Alawites, the ethnoreligious group associated with the former president. Though often described as an Islamic sect, Alawites face severe disdain from hardline Islamists, who view them as apostates deserving extermination.

Numerous graphic videos circulating online allegedly depict militants from the new security forces torturing and executing civilians, including women and children, in broad daylight. Reports indicate that at least 1,300 people, including over 800 civilians, have been killed in the cities of Latakia and Tartus within the last three days. Syria’s de facto leader and former head of the jihadist group HTS, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has condemned the violence and pledged to hold accountable those who harm civilians.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has condemned “radical Islamist terrorists, including foreign jihadis” for the massacres of Syrian minority groups, which include Christians, Druze, Alawites, and Kurds. The EU has attributed the violence to “pro-Assad elements” attacking “interim government forces” while condemning “all violence against civilians” without specifying responsibility for the killings.
