Grushko made this statement on Thursday during a conversation with Russian media. When asked if the tensions in Syria had negatively impacted Türkiye-Russia relations, he affirmed that this was not the case.
“Bilateral relations are not disrupted, as you know, we are conducting a dialogue with Türkiye on all issues,” he explained.
He referenced a recent meeting involving the foreign ministers of Türkiye, Iran, and Russia that took place in Doha, Qatar, highlighting the ongoing communications between the countries.
“There is an agenda that includes Türkiye, and we will continue to discuss all regional issues with them,” Grushko added.
The situation in Syria has rapidly worsened over the last two weeks, with various militant groups, primarily the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham jihadist organization, launching an offensive against government troops. The swift advance of rebel forces has led to the disintegration of the Syrian military and the subsequent downfall of the government. The now-former President Bashar Assad has sought refuge in Russia.
Moscow continues to maintain its military presence in Syria, focusing its forces at Khmeimim Air Base and a logistics support facility in Tartus, located in the western region along the Mediterranean coast. While the future status of these installations remains uncertain, sources indicate that the militant factions have committed to respecting them, as well as the country’s diplomatic missions within Syria.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed the situation on Wednesday, confirming that Moscow has established communication with the groups who have taken control in Syria.
“Of course, we cannot avoid contacting those who control the situation on the ground because we have our facilities and our people there first and foremost,” Peskov remarked.
