The U.S. is developing airfield infrastructure in Greenland, aimed at potentially accommodating fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, as reported by Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin, according to RIA Novosti.
This statement follows U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's renewed interest in purchasing the self-governing Arctic island from Denmark, as he has not dismissed the possibility of using economic measures or military action to achieve this goal.
Barbin pointed out that the U.S. Pituffik Space Base, located on the northwest coast of Greenland, is part of the nation's early warning system for nuclear threats from the Arctic.
“A comprehensive modernization is underway, including that of radar systems worth billions of dollars. Airfield infrastructure is also being developed for F-35 fighter jets that are capable of carrying nuclear weapons,” the ambassador noted. He added that the base, previously known as Thule Air Base, has already been used by these fighter jets during U.S. Air Force exercises.
Barbin emphasized that Russia is focused on “strengthening stability” in the Arctic region, which he believes can only be achieved through the establishment of a security system that treats all Arctic states equally. He expressed concern that Trump’s approach to Greenland exacerbates tensions and demonstrates a refusal to promote stability and foster dialogue in the Arctic.
Barbin cautioned that Russia would take Trump's position into account for better defense planning.
Trump had first proposed purchasing Greenland from Denmark in 2019 during his earlier term in office. At a recent press conference at Mar-a-Lago, he reiterated that he would not rule out using economic measures or military force to take control of the territory, arguing that it is crucial for U.S. national security.
In addition, he has suggested the U.S. should absorb Canada and has firmly stated his intention to reclaim control over the Panama Canal.
Officials in Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea of selling the island, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserting, “Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future either.”
