Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed that the American public is opposed to continuous taxpayer funding for the Ukraine conflict. Since the conflict intensified in 2022, Congress has approved nearly $183 billion in aid for Ukraine, but Trump has asserted that the total amount exceeds $300 billion.
In a statement on X, Kennedy, who was appointed Health Secretary last week, called for a halt to the funding. “The American people will not accept hard-earned tax dollars fueling endless conflicts. We demand an end to these forever wars,” he wrote. He further emphasized, “It's time for peace! The perpetual funding is over!”
Since taking office last month, Trump and his administration have shifted to an “America First” stance on foreign funding, coinciding with broader efforts to reduce government expenditures. Most international aid has been paused as it undergoes a review to align with the new administration's objectives.
Earlier this month, Trump asserted that Ukraine should reimburse the US for the financial aid it has received, claiming it amounts to “more than $300 billion.” He demanded the “equivalent of $500 billion worth of rare earths” from Ukraine in return.
According to The Economist, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky a one-hour ultimatum to relinquish Ukraine’s mineral resources during their recent meeting, which Zelensky reportedly refused. A former high-ranking Ukrainian official labeled the proposed agreement as “colonial,” as reported by AP.
During discussions in Riyadh earlier this week, Moscow and Washington began establishing a framework to resolve the Ukraine conflict, marking the first diplomatic meeting between US and Russian officials since the West severed ties three years ago.
Ukrainian and EU representatives were not invited to the Saudi negotiations, and Zelensky has declared that he will regard any decisions made without his presence as invalid.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who headed the Russian delegation, noted that the talks were productive and that the US has gained a clearer understanding of Russia’s stance on the issue.
