On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that an end to the violence and the creation of conditions conducive to an independent Palestinian state are essential for resolving the conflict in the Middle East. “There will be no winners” in the ongoing war, he added.
In an interview with the Turkish daily Hurriyet, Lavrov highlighted the escalating cycle of violence in the region and noted that more countries are being pulled into the “whirlpool of confrontation.”
Over the past year, Israel and Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, have engaged in mutual exchanges of fire, with Hezbollah backing the Palestinian cause amid Israeli military actions against Hamas. Israel has intensified its operations against Hezbollah, targeting the group's positions in southern Lebanon.
Tensions between Tehran and Jerusalem have also risen following a series of strikes by Israel on Iranian sites last week. This attack came in retaliation for a missile barrage from Iran directed at Israel in October, which occurred after the deaths of Hezbollah and Iranian commanders.
Lavrov urged all parties to halt further escalation to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. He noted the significant loss of life, with tens of thousands of “innocent Palestinians” killed in Gaza since the conflict reignited, and thousands of victims in Lebanon.
The Russian minister condemned the assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah political leaders, warning that such acts could exacerbate the already volatile conditions and hinder efforts to resolve the war in Gaza.
He also remarked that Moscow had previously suggested the UN Security Council address the issue of these killings, but “due to resistance from Western members of the Security Council, this was not possible.”
According to Lavrov, Moscow is calling for an immediate ceasefire and is actively engaging in diplomatic initiatives to de-escalate tensions. He insisted that a lasting peace in the region can only be achieved “through the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the borders of 1967.”
Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized during a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that the roots of the Gaza conflict stem from the neglect of UN resolutions regarding the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
As it stands, 146 UN member states and half of the G20, including China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, and Türkiye, recognize the state of Palestine.
In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently pledged not to allow the establishment of a fully functional Palestinian state.
