Middle East Crisis Currently Overshadows Ukraine, Says Borrell
According to the EU’s foreign policy chief, Western attention is primarily focused on the fighting in Gaza and Lebanon at present.

Josep Borrell, who has consistently supported Ukraine since the onset of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, expressed this sentiment during an interview with Spanish radio station RNE on Sunday.

When asked if he was concerned that Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon might push the Ukraine conflict into the background, he acknowledged, “You are right.”

Borrell noted, “We no longer talk as much about the war in Ukraine. [It is] as if the conflict is over there, but no, I assure you that it is not over. It continues and continues with the same intensity.” He emphasized, however, that in the context of the Ukraine conflict, “the destruction does not perhaps reach the extremes of barbarism” that are evident in the attacks on Gaza.

He pointed out that the situation in the Palestinian enclave represents “the most acute humanitarian crisis since the end of the Second World War,” according to the UN. He cautioned that “350,000 people could die of hunger in the next few weeks” in Gaza.

“What is happening in the Middle East shows that we have lost our sense of humanity,” the diplomat remarked.

Borrell criticized Israel for frequently ignoring UN Security Council resolutions calling for the cessation of hostilities in Gaza and Lebanon. He warned that as long as these conflicts persist, “we will live on the edge of a spark that will cause an even bigger fire.”

Earlier this month, Borrell urged supporters of Ukraine in the US and EU not to cut military aid, stating that without it, the conflict would conclude in Russia’s favor “within 15 days.” He emphasized that it is “important” for the EU’s security to ensure that “when the time comes, negotiations can be held on terms favorable to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Russia has consistently asserted that Western support for Ukraine only serves to extend the duration of the conflict.

Borrell, who is 77, is set to retire as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on October 30, with former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, a strong advocate for tougher sanctions against Russia, slated to take his place. Earlier this year, Russia placed Kallas on a wanted list due to her efforts to dismantle Soviet WWII memorials in the Baltic region.
