On Wednesday, Slovak MEP Katarina Roth-Nevedyalova shared with TASS that Bratislava recognizes Moscow's efforts towards peace. Roth-Nevedyalova, who is affiliated with Prime Minister Robert Fico’s SMER-SD party and leads its international relations department, stated that Slovakia has “always called for negotiations and a peace process for stopping the conflict,” emphasizing that the EU should have assumed a mediating role from the outset.
She expressed optimism, noting, “I see it as a positive sign... Russia’s readiness to cease fire, start talks, and seek a path towards peace,” following Fico's recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In December, Fico visited Moscow to engage with Putin on various matters, including the supply of Russian gas to Slovakia and the situation in Ukraine. After this meeting, Fico declared that Slovakia was prepared to facilitate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
He stated, “If someone wants to organize a peace negotiation in the Slovak Republic, we will be ready and hospitable,” in a Facebook post. The initiative was well received by Moscow, with Putin responding, “we are not against it.” Putin also commended Bratislava’s “neutral position” regarding the conflict.
Differing from other EU nations, Slovakia has maintained a stance advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and has opposed supplying arms to Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Roth-Nevedyalova reiterated the prime minister's commitment, asserting, “I am sure that Slovakia is ready to contribute to the peace process and help to put an end [to the Ukraine conflict]” in the context of potentially hosting peace discussions.
The prospect of Russia-Ukraine peace talks has gained traction following Donald Trump’s recent victory in the US presidential election, with the Republican pledging to swiftly end the conflict.
Moscow has made it clear that it is willing to engage in talks, contingent upon acknowledging the territorial “reality on the ground,” which entails recognition of the loss of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporozhye, and Crimea by Kiev.
Earlier this year, Putin proposed a peace initiative, stating Russia would cease hostilities immediately if Ukrainian troops withdrew from Donbass, Kherson, and Zaporozhye, along with a commitment to neutrality. However, this proposal was retracted following a Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region in August.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky remains firm on the requirement for the return of the four regions that joined Russia in 2022, along with seeking an invitation to join the US-led NATO alliance—demands that Moscow regards as unacceptable.
