Upon returning to office, President Donald Trump annulled 78 executive orders established by former President Joe Biden, including numerous protections for transgender rights and efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion. The orders imposed a 60-day deadline for federal entities to halt any related practices.
According to the memos regarding the removal of pronouns, a Friday afternoon deadline has been set. “Pronouns and any other information not permitted in the policy must be removed from CDC/ATSDR employee signatures by 5 p.m. ET on Friday,” ABC News quoted one communication directed to employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was sent on Friday morning.
Additionally, reports indicate that a similar notification advocating for the removal of DEI “language in Federal discourse, communications, and publications” was issued to employees at the Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation the previous Thursday.
On Friday, several federal agency websites, including those of the Federal Aviation Administration and the Census Bureau, reportedly experienced temporary outages, with some pages appearing blank before coming back online later. The Guardian noted that the Bureau of Prisons had altered a webpage previously titled “inmate gender” to “inmate sex” and ceased to provide a listing of transgender inmates.
Donald Trump stated in his inaugural address on January 1 that the federal government would officially recognize only two genders. The executive order titled ‘Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government’ asserts that “there are only two genders, male and female,” and instructs federal agencies to adjust official documents like passports and visas accordingly.
