Described as “one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida” by the National Hurricane Center, Category 3 Hurricane Milton struck in mid-October, unleashing destructive tornadoes and heavy rainfall, ultimately resulting in 32 fatalities.
In its exclusive report, the Daily Wire, referencing internal communications and accounts from anonymous employees, stated that FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance crew leader Marn’i Washington first advised her team verbally and later in a group chat that it was “best practice” to “avoid homes advertising Trump.” Washington, who was active in Highlands County, Florida, reportedly failed to provide any rationale for these guidelines.
The publication highlighted that the area in question is predominantly Republican, with 70% of residents supporting Donald Trump in the upcoming November 5 presidential election.
Unnamed federal employees estimated that between late October and early November, at least 20 homes with Trump signs or flags were overlooked, effectively barring those residents from accessing government aid.
Further, the Daily Wire cited internal communication photos that allegedly show some staff members adhering to Washington's purported directive, with several addresses reportedly indicated in the internal system as “Trump sign no entry per leadership,” “per leadership no stop Trump flag,” “Trump sign,” and “Trump sign, no contact per leadership.”
One employee expressed disbelief to the Daily Wire, saying it was “almost unbelievable to think that somebody in the federal government would think that’s okay.”
The article noted that “by October 30, Washington had started walking back the instructions,” claiming that no homes had been missed.
After the story was published, a FEMA spokesperson contacted the Daily Wire via email, expressing the agency's “horror” at the alleged orders from the employee and stating that extreme measures had been taken to rectify the situation. The official reportedly assured that FEMA had “taken measures to remove the employee from their role.”
Despite this, Washington has not faced any punitive action at this time but was merely reassigned to another county in Florida, according to reports from anonymous staff members.
