Malaysian PM calls US claims against RT just ‘gossip’
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stated that Washington's allegations regarding Russian media interference in the US presidential election should be dismissed as “gossip” unless supported by substantial evidence. He made these remarks during an interview with RT and RIA Novosti on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the US Treasury unveiled a new set of sanctions aimed at Russian media figures, including executives from RT, claiming these actions were intended to combat “malign influence operations” occurring on American soil ahead of the upcoming November presidential election.

Additionally, the Department of Justice has revealed indictments against two Russian nationals under the 1939 Foreign Agents Registration Act, accusing them of producing English-language content and distributing it to American audiences on behalf of the Russian government.

Ibrahim commented on the RT accusations, stating, “The American system is strong. You should not underestimate their capacity to protect their own interest.” He further noted, “If they have concrete evidence, they can take it up. Otherwise I take it as just some interesting gossip and news that we enjoy, but [it] is not taken very seriously.”

The interview took place at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, where Ibrahim is currently participating.

Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of RT and one of those targeted by the US sanctions, criticized the Americans for placing undue emphasis on RT’s perceived influence on US elections, suggesting that they would simply eliminate them if the outlet were to “move out for good.” She also shared a humorous video released by RT in December 2023 during New Year celebrations. The video depicted her leading a covert operation to implant a remote-control chip in US President Joe Biden, featuring a deepfake of the President performing the Russian hit song “I am Russian” by singer Shaman in the Oval Office.

The Russian government has condemned the US for its actions against journalists. Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, characterized these measures as evidence that the US is evolving into a “neoliberal dictatorship.”
