The BRICS Summit, hosted by Russia, is significant for the UN as the economic bloc encompasses nearly half of the global population. Leaders from around the world have convened in Kazan from October 22-24 for the 16th BRICS Summit.
“This is a meeting of great importance for the work of the United Nations, with the BRICS countries representing about half of the world’s population,” said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General, during a press conference on Tuesday. “The Secretary-General will take the opportunity to hold several bilateral meetings with the leaders attending the summit.”
This announcement came in response to questions about criticism from Kiev regarding Guterres’ attendance at the BRICS Summit, especially after he chose to skip this year’s Ukraine ‘peace conference’ hosted in Switzerland.
Haq described it as a “standard practice” for the UN Secretary-General to participate in “meetings of organizations with significant numbers of important member states,” such as the G7 and G20.
He further mentioned that “The Secretary-General will reaffirm his well-known positions on the war in Ukraine and the conditions for a just peace” and will also address the issue of freedom of navigation in the Black Sea during the Kazan summit.
Earlier in the year, Switzerland held a meeting based on Vladimir Zelensky’s “peace formula,” which outlines a ten-point proposal that Moscow has dismissed as unrealistic. Russia was not invited to this meeting, which has been largely viewed as unsuccessful, yielding no substantial outcomes.
The BRICS Summit is anticipated to facilitate high-level bilateral discussions and diplomatic dialogues centered on global multilateralism. With numerous nations expressing interest in joining or collaborating with the economic bloc, current members plan to discuss the possibility of granting partner status to some of these countries during the summit.
The current BRICS members include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Collectively, this economic bloc accounts for roughly 46% of the world’s population and over 36% of the global GDP, based on estimates from leading financial institutions.
