A recent exhibit featuring a lunar sample from China's Chang'e-5 mission captured the fascination of many in Bangkok. The display, named "The Moon Shines Bright On Me," consisted of a 75-milligram soil sample encased in a rotating crystal sphere, providing a detailed glimpse at the moon's surface that enthralled attendees.

Among the visitors was an elementary school student, Tannya Neesanant, who expressed her fascination. "The lunar sample's unusual color intrigued my curiosity, as it appeared to be sand rather than soil," she remarked.

The exhibition was a result of a partnership between the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) and the China National Space Administration (CNSA). It took place during the Sci Power for Future Thailand Fair, which ended Sunday.

This exhibit showcased fragments of the moon's surface retrieved by the Chang'e-5 probe, one of China's most ambitious aerospace projects. According to Suppawat Zhou, a staff member at the fair, the opportunity to examine these samples up close proved inspirational for many, especially children. "It was truly rewarding to see visually impaired and deaf students learning about the exhibits through the interpretation from their teachers, which sparked their keen interest in astronomy, space and technology," Zhou noted.

Additionally, NARIT's director, Saran Poshyachinda, highlighted that the display also shed light on Thailand's advancements in space technology, including a new instrument designed for tracking cosmic radiation and space weather, slated to be part of China's upcoming Chang'e-7 moon mission.

In April, ahead of the exhibition, Thailand and China reinforced their cooperative efforts in space exploration and the peaceful use of outer space by signing two memorandums of understanding, reflecting on an international partnership for a lunar research station. Saran expressed anticipation for future collaborations: "We are looking forward to receiving lunar samples from the CNSA for our laboratory test, so we can develop suitable instruments for future exploration on the moon's surface," he stated. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with China for enhancing Thailand's technological capabilities and aligning with global standards: "Collaboration with China is very crucial for developing our own capabilities and helping us to be in line with global leaders," he mentioned.
