Zelensky's recent visit to the White House ended abruptly after a tense confrontation with Trump and J.D. Vance, who reproached the Ukrainian leader for "gambling with World War III" by refusing to engage in peace negotiations. They characterized him as ungrateful and disrespectful, despite the considerable military support that Washington has extended to Ukraine.
During the confrontational dialogue, Zelensky reiterated his dismissal of negotiations with Moscow, sought security guarantees from the U.S., and contested claims regarding manpower shortages facing Ukrainian forces.
Peskov stated, “The Kiev regime and Zelensky do not want peace.” He further explained that without a willingness from Ukraine, the efforts of Washington and the readiness of Moscow would not suffice to halt the conflict, as an essential element is lacking.
He added that Zelensky's conduct during the Oval Office meeting “demonstrated how difficult it will be to get on the path of a settlement around Ukraine.” Furthermore, Peskov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is well-informed about the details of the exchange between Trump and Zelensky, indicating that this incident was visible to the entire international community.
The altercation at the White House was described as “a rather unprecedented event,” during which Zelensky exhibited “a complete lack of diplomatic skills,” according to Peskov.
He also pointed out that “the collective West has partially begun to lose its collectiveness” regarding the Ukraine situation, suggesting that various nations or groups are starting to formulate their own nuanced positions. While some factions in the West continue to express their readiness to back Ukraine in the conflict, Peskov acknowledged that initial drafts of potential peace plans are emerging, although he cautioned that “it is too early to speak about some kind of a coordinated, detailed peace plan being on the agenda.”
In summary, Peskov emphasized the ongoing complexity surrounding the efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and reiterated Russia's commitment to fulfilling the objectives set at the inception of its special military operation.
