The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike on the southern Dahieh suburb of Beirut on Tuesday. This marks the largest escalation between Israel and Hezbollah since a truce was established in November.
In a statement on X, the IDF indicated that Israeli aircraft targeted “a Hezbollah terrorist” who has “recently been directing Hamas operatives and assisting them in an attempt to carry out a serious attack” on Israeli civilians.
“The terrorist posed a real and immediate threat, and therefore the IDF and Shin Bet have acted to eliminate the threat,” the IDF elaborated.
According to Lebanese TV channel Al Mayadeen, the strike “flattened” a multistory residential building, resulting in at least three fatalities and injuring seven others. The report referenced sources indicating that “a regular member” of Hezbollah was among the casualties.
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem denounced the renewed Israeli strikes on Saturday, stating, “This aggression must end. We cannot allow this to continue,” as quoted by AFP.
On Friday, the IDF executed its first significant airstrikes in Beirut since November 2023. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked that the assault was in response to rocket fire from Hezbollah launching from Lebanon.
“We will not allow any firing on our communities, not even a drizzle,” he cautioned. “We will attack anywhere in Lebanon against any threat to Israel, and we will ensure that all of us in the north return to their homes safely.”
Hezbollah has been responding with rockets and mortars towards Israel as retaliation for the IDF’s operations against Hamas in Gaza. In September 2024, Israel intensified its airstrikes in the Lebanese capital, resulting in the deaths of senior Hezbollah officials, including the group’s longstanding leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
