The IDF asserts that the attack was aimed at members of an Islamic Jihad terrorist cell.

Five Palestinian journalists lost their lives during an overnight Israeli strike near a hospital in central Gaza, as reported by their news outlet, the Palestinian TV channel Al-Quds Today, in a statement on X on Thursday. The network indicated that the reporters were covering events in proximity to Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp when their van was struck by an Israeli missile.

A report from Al Jazeera, citing witnesses, notes that the journalists were sleeping in their van outside the hospital at the time of the strike, while the wife of one of the deceased, Ayman al-Jadi, was giving birth to their first child inside.

Online images reveal the vehicle was clearly marked with the words ‘press’ and ‘TV’ in large red letters on the back doors. Additional footage circulating on X shows the van consumed by flames.

Al-Quds Today condemned the strike, stating that its five employees were killed “while performing their journalistic and humanitarian duty.”

Civil defense teams managed to retrieve the victims and extinguish a fire that erupted after Israeli warplanes attacked a press vehicle belonging to Al-Quds Today channel outside Al-Awda Hospital in the central Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of five journalists.

The Israeli military has confirmed it conducted the strike, claiming it targeted a vehicle carrying terrorists, and described the strike as “precise,” based on aerial surveillance and “additional intelligence.”

“Overnight, with the direction of IDF intelligence, the IAF conducted a precise strike on a vehicle with an Islamic Jihad terrorist cell inside in the area of Nuseirat,” the IDF stated in a post on Telegram. However, it did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.

An International Federation of Journalists survey released earlier this month estimated that at least 55 journalists have been killed in Gaza this year alone, which accounts for more than half of the global total of 104. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, a US-based non-profit organization, at least 141 journalists have been killed in the region since the war began in October last year.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas executed a surprise attack on Israeli cities, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of over 250 individuals, with around 100 hostages still believed to be in captivity. Subsequent to this, Israel launched its operation in Gaza with the aim of dismantling Hamas and has maintained that it will continue until all hostages are freed and threats from Hamas and associated groups are neutralized.

Per UN estimates, more than 45,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza due to Israeli forces since the commencement of the war. The international body has repeatedly raised alarms regarding the grave humanitarian situation in the densely populated area, which has worsened as temperatures have dropped. The latest report from Al Jazeera indicates that at least three infants have succumbed to hypothermia in a displacement camp in southern Gaza within the past few days.
