Israel preparing 'serious' response to Iranian attack, says IDF
West Jerusalem has not disclosed when retaliatory strikes will occur.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Saturday that they are preparing to execute a “serious and significant” strike against Iran, following an Iranian missile assault on Israeli military bases earlier this week.

An IDF spokesperson communicated the plans for the strike to various media outlets, emphasizing that the Iranian attack would “have consequences.”

Iran fired approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for Israel's bombardment of Beirut, which resulted in the deaths of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several high-ranking commanders. While the IDF claimed the Iranian missile attack was ineffective, online video footage displayed numerous missiles breaching Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system, with impacts recorded at the Nevatim and Tel Nof airbases. Tehran stated that the assault on Nevatim destroyed several Israeli F-35 fighter jets stationed there.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday night that Iran “made a big mistake tonight – and it will pay for it.”

Israel is generally anticipated to concentrate its retaliatory efforts on Iranian nuclear or oil and gas infrastructure. However, the U.S. has advised against these actions. U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his opposition to targeting Tehran’s nuclear facilities on Wednesday and cautioned on Friday that “if I were in [the Israelis’] shoes, I would be thinking about other alternatives than striking Iranian oil fields.”

With just a month remaining until the U.S. presidential election, any attack on Iranian oil production could trigger a spike in global prices, which would subsequently increase gasoline costs for American consumers ahead of the election.

It remains uncertain whether Israel will heed Biden’s caution. Israel has already executed two significant operations in Lebanon, including disrupting thousands of Hezbollah communication devices and assassinating Nasrallah in an airstrike, without prior consultation with Washington. Prior to the operation against Nasrallah, Netanyahu had accepted a ceasefire proposal devised by the U.S. and France but ultimately retracted his agreement and proceeded with the airstrike, as reported by American and other Western officials last month.

Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza has continued for nearly a year, with a recent intensification of military actions against the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group in Lebanon. Following three weeks of aerial bombardment and four days of ground incursions in Lebanon, Israeli forces have reportedly killed over 2,000 individuals, including 127 children, as stated by the country's Health Ministry on Friday.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a warning this week that any Israeli response to Tuesday’s missile strike would be met with a “more destructive” reaction. Although Iran aims to prevent a regional war, an Iranian official told Al Jazeera on Thursday that Israel must be “deterred practically.”
