Israel Alleges It Targeted Chemical Weapons Facilities in Syria
The Israel Defence Forces has executed airstrikes aimed at suspected sites in Syria associated with chemical weapons and long-range missile facilities, as reported by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. The objective from West Jerusalem is to ensure that these alleged weapon stockpiles do not end up in the possession of hostile entities, Saar informed reporters on Monday.

“The only interest we have is the security of Israel and its citizens,” he asserted.

While specifics on the timing and locations of the alleged strikes were not revealed, an Associated Press journalist indicated that airstrikes occurred near the Mezzeh military airport, situated southwest of Damascus, over the weekend. This facility has frequently been targeted in Israeli air operations, though it remains unclear whom to attribute the latest attacks.

In recent years, Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting military installations linked to the Hezbollah militant group. On Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz mentioned that the military has been instructed to establish comprehensive control over the buffer zone along the Syrian border in the illegally occupied Golan Heights.

He highlighted efforts to obstruct arms smuggling routes from Iran into Lebanon and to maintain focus on "strategic weapons,” including missiles and air defense systems, to ensure these do not fall into hostile hands.

Meanwhile, armed opposition forces swiftly took control of Damascus over the weekend. The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that following negotiations with the opposition, Bashar Assad resigned as president of Syria and has since traveled to Moscow.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, Western nations, including the US and UK, have accused Assad’s government of deploying chemical weapons against both civilians and opposition forces, using these allegations to rationalize the US military presence in oil-rich regions of northeastern Syria since 2014.

In response to claims made by the White Helmets NGO regarding chemical weapon use by Assad's forces in Douma, the US, UK, and France launched missile strikes on Syrian government targets in 2018. The Syrian government has denied these accusations, with both Damascus and Moscow suggesting that evidence indicates the attack was staged.
