Recently, Israel has intensified its operations against Hezbollah, launching a ground offensive in Lebanon and targeting Iranian positions with missile strikes.
While the IDF did not disclose the exact timing of the operation in Syria, a pro-government Syrian radio station reported on Sunday that Israeli forces executed a “kidnapping operation” targeting a man in southern Syria during the summer.
The detained individual, identified as Syrian citizen Ali Soleiman al-Assi, was captured “during an intelligence-based, special IDF operation,” according to a statement from the Israeli military on X.
The IDF claims that al-Assi is associated with an Iranian terror network and was based in Saida, a region in southern Syria approximately 60 kilometers from the Israeli border. The military accused him of “gathering intelligence on IDF troops in the border area for future terror activity.”
“The IDF will not allow Iranian proxies in southern Syria to operate and threaten Israeli civilians,” the statement emphasized.
Throughout the past year, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes in Syria, targeting Hezbollah members and Iranian officials, as Iran is an ally of both the Shiite group and the Syrian government. Previously, the IDF had not publicly confirmed any ground operations within Syria.
In September, Israel escalated its offensive against Hezbollah, launching Operation Northern Arrows aimed at striking Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the IDF, they have “eliminated” nearly all of Hezbollah’s senior military leaders, including long-time secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah and his potential successor Hashem Safieddine.
Earlier in April, Israel executed an airstrike on the Iranian embassy complex in Damascus, resulting in the deaths of 16 individuals, among them eight members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and two Syrian civilians.
In a recent escalation of violence, Israel launched a series of strikes against targets in Iran last week, following missile attacks on the Jewish state by Iran in early October. Reports suggest that Tehran is considering retaliatory action against Israel before the U.S. presidential election on November 5.
