The IRGC claims this offensive is a retaliation for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, who was killed in Tehran in July, as well as the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon. Iran has issued a warning to Israel regarding any possible retaliation, vowing a “crushing response” if action is taken.
Numerous videos circulating online indicate that many missiles fired on Tuesday evening successfully breached Israel's anti-aircraft defenses.
While some footage seems to depict interceptions of incoming rockets, the magnitude of the attack has nonetheless allowed Iran to bypass these defenses, with various direct hits reported on the ground.
One notable impact was observed at an offshore gas platform near Ashkelon. An unverified video shows the installation apparently engulfed in flames, visible from a distance.
In response to the assault, Israel activated its ground defenses and reportedly dispatched 25 F-15 fighter jets. However, a significant portion of the Israeli Defense Forces’ fleet remains stationed in the northern part of the country, where it is engaged in a bombing campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
