In June, Hunter Biden faced three felony charges after being found guilty of lying on his gun-purchase paperwork from 2018, claiming he was not addicted to or using illegal drugs at the time. His sentencing was scheduled for this month.
In a statement released on Sunday evening, President Biden contended that his son's prosecution was “selectively and unfairly” motivated by his relationship to him. He asserted that “people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form.”
“It is clear that Hunter was treated differently,” he stated. The president further elaborated that the charges against Hunter were instigated “only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.” He criticized Republicans for undermining “a carefully negotiated plea deal” that would have provided a “reasonable resolution of Hunter's cases.”
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong,” he expressed. “In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”
This pardon marks a significant shift from Biden’s prior stance, as he and his administration had consistently indicated they would respect the jury's decision and not grant a pardon. In his recent statement, Biden acknowledged a change in his viewpoint. “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice,” he remarked.
Hunter Biden has been under intense scrutiny throughout his father's presidency, with Republicans alleging that he served as the president's “bagman” for allegedly corrupt dealings in Ukraine and China.
President Biden has refuted these corruption claims and has publicly supported his son, describing him as “the smartest guy I know.”
