The 39th president of the United States died at the age of 100 in his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday after struggling with an aggressive form of melanoma since 2023, spending his final years under hospice care.
In his initial statement following Carter's death, Abbott expressed that he and his wife were extending their “prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the entire Carter family.”
Rosalynn Carter passed away at the age of 96 on November 19, 2023, shortly after entering hospice.
Abbott's office corrected the statement about two hours later, but the error quickly drew attention on social media.
"Did anyone in the governor’s office proof the condolence note?" a Texas Democratic group remarked in response to the governor’s post on platform X. Another user questioned, "You sent condolences to Rosalynn? What world are you living in?" Yet another comment pointed out, "Guess someone around your uninformed circle realized you sent condolences to Mrs. Carter who preceded President Carter."
The governor's office has not issued a comment regarding the incident.
This is not the first time Abbott's remarks have led to controversy. In January, he created an international uproar when the Mexican Foreign Ministry accused him of endorsing “violent acts” against migrants attempting to cross into the US. At that time, Abbott stated that Texas law enforcement agencies were only lacking in one area concerning illegal migration: “shooting people who come across the border.” He added that such actions would be deemed murder by Washington, prompting Mexico to express its disapproval and concern over his comments, which it said encourage "the dehumanization of the migrant community."
