As of December 30, the total wealth tracked by the index was $9.8 trillion, a slight decrease from a peak of $10.1 trillion on December 11. This amount is comparable to the combined GDPs of Germany, Japan, and Australia, based on World Bank data.
Notably, tech magnates such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jensen Huang were responsible for the largest gains. The list of the top ten earners also features Oracle founder Larry Ellison, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Together, these eight individuals amassed over $600 billion this year, making up 43% of the $1.5 trillion rise among the 500 richest people in the index.
Musk stood out as the biggest gainer in 2024, with his net worth more than doubling to $442.1 billion. Mark Zuckerberg experienced significant growth as well, bringing his wealth to $219 billion and securing a spot among the top three wealthiest people in the world. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, saw his wealth increase by $76 billion—partly due to his company's stock nearly tripling this year—making him one of the year's top gainers.
The US stock market rally greatly benefited many of the wealthiest individuals. The S&P 500 Index rose by 24% by year's end, and the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’—which includes Apple, Meta, Amazon, Alphabet, Tesla, Microsoft, and Nvidia—was responsible for more than half of the benchmark's gains. Additionally, the impact of Trump’s electoral victory positively influenced those on Bloomberg’s index, enhancing both stocks and digital assets. Following the election, the combined wealth of the 500 billionaires increased by $505 billion within five weeks, accounting for a third of their annual total.
Among the top ten earners, only two hail from sectors outside of technology: Bernard Arnault, the founder of LVMH, and Warren Buffett, the investment expert from Berkshire Hathaway.
