Wagenknecht, who leads the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, expressed concern over what she describes as Berlin’s “deafening silence” more than two years after the incident. She criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government for withholding substantial information regarding the ongoing investigation and its findings from parliament.
The lawmaker referenced various reports from Western media that suggest a group of Ukrainian divers was involved in the destruction of the Russian undersea pipelines, which had supplied natural gas to Germany. Allegedly acting on the orders of General Valery Zaluzhny—a figure who was dismissed and later took up the role of Kiev's ambassador to the UK, as reported by Der Spiegel—this privately funded group was noted in several accounts.
“Anyone who has friends like this really does not need any enemies,” Wagenknecht commented, adding that “if this story is true, then we really have had a scandal of the century.” She also mentioned reports indicating that the CIA may have preemptively warned Berlin about the potential attack, yet no actions were taken. The continuing silence from the government following the incident raises further concerns, she noted.
Wagenknecht urged that the establishment of an investigative committee, as requested by the BSW, is becoming increasingly crucial due to Berlin’s lack of cooperation with both parliament and the public. As of now, the German authorities have not released official information about the investigation. Reports from August indicated that an arrest warrant had been issued in the case for a Ukrainian individual referred to as “Vladimir Z.”
“The need for investigation is all the more urgent since Ukraine, which is a recipient of billions of German taxpayers’ money, is the chief suspect,” she stated.
“If Ukraine is responsible for the terrorist act against the German energy supply, the arms deliveries must end immediately and the question of compensation must be put on the table.”
Germany ranks as the second-largest military aid donor to Ukraine, contributing over €10 billion from January 2022 to June 2024, according to the Kiel Institute for World Economy. Additionally, during the same period, Berlin has provided nearly $5 billion in humanitarian and financial support to Kiev, as estimated by the think tank.
