German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has firmly dismissed the notion of a “division of security and responsibility between Europe” and the US. After an emergency NATO leaders' meeting in France on Monday, he expressed his disagreement with the idea that the US would withdraw support for Kiev while European nations continue their backing.
The administration of former President Donald Trump is seeking a peace deal with Russia that aims to bring a quick resolution to the Ukraine conflict. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that Washington does not envision a role for American troops or NATO in any security arrangements for Ukraine after a truce.
The leaders’ gathering, called by French President Emmanuel Macron, was designed to forge a cohesive European response to the shifting U.S. policy, despite the absence of some dissenting EU members. At a press conference following the meeting, Scholz brushed off inquiries about Germany's potential troop contributions to Ukraine, labeling them as premature and annoying, while stressing his belief in NATO’s security framework.
The Chancellor noted that US allies in Europe concur that “there must be no division of security and responsibility between Europe and the USA.” He remarked, “NATO is based on the fact that we always act together and take risks together, thereby ensuring our security.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the UK is “ready and willing” to extend security guarantees to Ukraine, including the possibility of sending British troops, prior to his arrival in Paris for the discussions.
In contrast, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized before the meeting that his government does not plan to deploy troops to Ukraine. After the summit, he remarked, “such meetings do not end in decisions” and highlighted the necessity of close cooperation with the US.
Attendees of the three-hour talks held at the Elysee Palace included leaders from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark, along with representatives from NATO and the EU. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, whose government has long criticized the West's approach to the Ukraine crisis, expressed a negative view of the discussions in light of the impending US-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia.
”We trust that the American-Russian negotiations will be successful, and we hope that this will lead to peace in Ukraine as soon as possible,” Szijjarto remarked, characterizing the participants from Paris as “war-mongering countries that have pursued a misguided strategy.”
