China has expressed optimism that all parties involved in the Ukraine conflict will eventually be included in peace negotiations. Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, made this remark on Tuesday as high-level discussions commenced between representatives from Russia and the US.
The meeting aims to reestablish diplomatic relations between Moscow and Washington and create a foundation for resolving the ongoing conflict. Notably, Ukraine and the EU are absent from these discussions.
"We hope that all parties involved and stakeholders can participate in the peace talks process in due course," Guo stated.
The talks in Riyadh feature teams led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking the first high-level discussions between the two nations regarding Ukraine since 2022.
US special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, emphasized that involving too many parties in the negotiations might hinder progress, but he assured that the interests of Kiev and Brussels would still be taken into account.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated that Kiev was unaware of the talks and would not recognize any agreements resulting from them.
Beijing has taken an active stance on promoting a diplomatic resolution since the hostilities escalated nearly three years ago. In 2023, China proposed a 12-point peace plan and has maintained a dialogue with both Moscow and Kiev.
Guo reiterated that Beijing views dialogue and negotiation as the only viable solutions to the crisis.
