Hungarian FM says there's 'No place' for EU 'warmongers' in Ukraine discussions
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has expressed support for US-Russia discussions, stating that the EU's exclusion from talks in Saudi Arabia is justified. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, he noted that there should be “no place” for those wishing to prolong the Ukraine conflict in peace initiatives.

Bilateral negotiations between Russia and the US commenced in Riyadh that same day, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the discussions. This marked the first direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv in nearly three years, aimed at restoring relations and potentially addressing the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

The talks have incited significant backlash within the EU, as member states voiced frustration over being sidelined by Washington, which did not consult them before re-engaging with Moscow.

“We, peace-loving Hungarians, have been waiting for this for three years!” Szijjarto remarked in his Facebook update, criticizing the West's approach to the situation.

“Pro-war Europeans are decrying they were not invited to sit at the table... but why should they be? The talks are about peace, they are no place for warmongers!” he further asserted. Ahead of the US-Russia discussions, Szijjarto expressed his hope for a swift resolution leading to “peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.”

In recent days, numerous EU officials have criticized Washington’s unilateral push for peace, which began following US President Donald Trump’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump subsequently called for an immediate start to peace negotiations concerning Ukraine.

Tensions escalated when Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, indicated that the EU would not participate in discussions focused on peace, leading French President Emmanuel Macron to convene an emergency meeting of European leaders.

This summit occurred in Paris on Monday, attended by leaders from Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark, as well as EU Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen and NATO chief Mark Rutte. Although discussions addressed the potential deployment of European troops to Ukraine and increasing defense spending among NATO members, they did not result in any concrete solutions.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reported that there was consensus on the need for a unified approach, stating that “there must be no division of security and responsibility between Europe and the US” regarding Ukraine. Macron concluded that achieving lasting peace would require cooperation among the EU, the US, and Ukraine.
