White House states US will not fund Gaza reconstruction following proposed takeover
President Donald Trump’s proposal on Tuesday aimed at taking control of the Gaza Strip, envisioning its redevelopment as the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump will rely on Washington’s Middle Eastern partners to finance the rebuilding of Gaza.

On Tuesday, Trump proclaimed that “the US will take over the Gaza Strip,” proposing to demolish the buildings damaged in the conflict between Israel and Hamas and transform the area into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” When asked about the possibility of deploying US troops to the enclave, Trump indicated he would “do what is necessary.” He also suggested that Palestinians should be relocated to neighboring states, funded by the “neighboring countries of great wealth.”

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Leavitt addressed questions regarding the president’s proposal, stating, “The United States is not going to pay for the rebuilding of Gaza.” She explained that “His administration is going to work with our partners in the region to reconstruct this region,” adding that Trump has not committed to sending US troops into Gaza.

When queried about the potential for forcibly evicting Palestinians from the area, Leavitt responded, “The President is prepared to rebuild Gaza for Palestinians and all people in the region, peace-loving people who want real economic development and opportunity.” She also mentioned that Trump is “committed to rebuilding Gaza and to temporarily relocating those who are there,” clarifying whether Gazans wishing to remain would be allowed to do so.

In relation to the plan, the US president has communicated with several Arab leaders, making it clear that he expects countries in the region, especially Egypt and Jordan, to accept Palestinian refugees, according to Leavitt.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II voiced strong opposition to any efforts to displace Palestinians or annex their territory, as noted in a statement from the Jordanian royal court on Wednesday.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry emphasized the necessity of keeping Palestinians in Gaza, reaffirming Cairo’s commitment to the two-state solution in a press release issued on Wednesday.

Earlier, Saudi Arabia asserted that it will not formalize its relations with Israel until a Palestinian state is acknowledged by all parties involved, with the Saudi Foreign Ministry stating unequivocally that it rejects any “attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land.”
