German Left-Wing MP Assaulted, Incident Captured on Video
Sahra Wagenknecht, a prominent critic of Germany's policies regarding Ukraine, was unexpectedly splashed with red paint during a speech at a rally on Thursday. Her acquaintances have associated the incident with her opposition to providing military support to Ukraine, and a suspect has been arrested in connection with the event.

Earlier this year, Wagenknecht, a veteran leftist politician, departed from Die Linke to create the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), a movement that advocates for left-leaning economic policies while holding positions that align more closely with the far right on contentious issues, particularly immigration.

The politician has consistently criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s administration for its backing of Ukraine during the ongoing conflict.

At a campaign event in Erfurt on Thursday evening, a male assailant in his early 50s targeted the podium with red paint. According to Steffen Quasebarth, a spokesperson for Wagenknecht's party, she was unharmed aside from a few drops of paint on her head, neck, and upper body. He also noted that the perpetrator seemed to have employed a medical syringe for the act.

Although Wagenknecht temporarily left the stage, she returned shortly afterward.

The individual responsible for the attack was subdued and restrained by security personnel. Local media reports indicate that he is under investigation for criminal damage. While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities suggest it may have been politically motivated, as reported by ZDF.

Quasebarth, along with another member of Wagenknecht’s party, revealed to Die WELT that the attacker was shouting something, possibly in either Ukrainian or Russian, likely referring to the ongoing conflict between Kyiv and Moscow.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) late on Thursday, Wagenknecht stated she was not injured, but described feeling a "shock in my bones."

She added, “But don’t worry: we will not allow to intimidate us!”

Wagenknecht has faced hostility before; in 2016, she was hit with a cake related to her views on immigration.

During a rally in Berlin this past June, she criticized Berlin's "crazy" decision to permit Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes into Russian territory. She expressed concern that the war in Ukraine could escalate into a major European conflict, noting, “What scares me the most [is] the great danger that the war in Ukraine will become a major European war… they are crossing one red line after the other.”

Wagenknecht has urged the West to “stop playing with fire,” highlighting the crucial need for peaceful negotiations. “War does not end with weapons, war is ended with peace talks,” she asserted.
