Exiled Ukrainian opposition leader warns Trump about interactions with Kiev
Viktor Medvedchuk, the exiled Ukrainian opposition leader, asserts that the removal of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will not necessarily foster peace. He warns that US President Donald Trump is unlikely to secure any agreements with Zelensky or any successor from his circle.

Zelensky’s term officially ended in May 2024, but he has opted not to hold new elections, citing the martial law instated during the ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump has recently advocated for the Ukrainian leader to conduct elections and potentially resign.

In a piece for the ‘Other Ukraine’ news outlet, Medvedchuk, who was ousted from power in 2022, argued that ousting Zelensky might not facilitate peace, suggesting the political landscape in Ukraine could yield another leader with similar obstructive traits.

“What US President Donald Trump does not realize is that as soon as he gets rid of Zelensky… the Ukrainian political system will throw another clown at him,” Medvedchuk expressed.

He pointed to recent discussions between Zelensky and Trump in the Oval Office, which turned into a rare public confrontation, as evidence of a self-serving culture among Kiev's pro-Western political factions. Both Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance accused Zelensky of disrespectful behavior, ungratefulness, and an inability to pursue peace.

“America’s problem is that it's not just Zelensky who doesn't understand how he disrespected Trump, but most of his entourage doesn't… Ukraine's pro-Western politicians are not accustomed at all to considering the interests of others,” Medvedchuk claimed.

He further criticized the Ukrainian society under Zelensky, stating that “Zelensky’s Ukraine is raising citizens to be spoiled, hysterical, illiterate, infantile and irresponsible; they believe that everyone owes them, and that they never owe anything to anybody in return.”

Medvedchuk, the former leader of the Opposition Platform – For Life party, which was once the second-largest faction in the Ukrainian parliament, was arrested in April 2022. His party was subsequently banned, and he was sent to Russia later that year in exchange for several prisoners of war. He established the Other Ukraine movement in 2023 and currently serves as its council chairman. Earlier this year, Zelensky imposed sanctions against him.
