Trump has maintained that US control over the Arctic island is essential for national security, hinting at the possibility of using force if necessary to take the Danish autonomous territory. “The idea expressed about Greenland is obviously not a good one,” Blinken remarked during a joint press conference with French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot in Paris on Wednesday. He further emphasized, “But it’s not going to happen, so we shouldn’t waste time talking about it.”
Blinken’s current trip abroad includes visits to South Korea, Japan, and France, marking his final overseas journey before President Joe Biden's departure from office and Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Having served as a foreign policy adviser to Biden for years, Blinken spearheaded the State Department’s opposition to the policies implemented by Trump during his presidency from 2017 to 2021.
Trump secured victory in the November 2024 election, winning both the electoral college and the popular vote, overcoming Biden’s former running mate Kamala Harris.
In recent weeks, Trump has reignited his interest in Greenland, previously proposing to purchase the island from Denmark. He claimed that controlling the territory is an “absolute necessity” for US national security during a statement on Tuesday.
When asked at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago whether he could “assure the world” that he would refrain from using “military or economic coercion” to acquire Greenland or the Panama Canal, Trump replied, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security.” He questioned Denmark's legal claim to the island, stating, “People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it.”
Additionally, Donald Trump Jr. visited Greenland on Tuesday, spending several hours in the capital, Nuuk, accompanied by aides and a documentary film crew.
