On Friday, South Korean authorities confirmed that a trash-laden balloon had landed in the parking lot of the government complex in Seoul. The inflatable was discovered near the main entrance, prompting a significant emergency response, with firefighters and police cordoning off the area for safety.
Following the incident, the military inspected the balloon for any hazardous substances, ultimately ensuring its safe removal from the location.
Reports from Yonhap news agency indicated that the balloon contained various household trash items, including a piece of green plastic with an address traced back to Pyongyang. It is believed that this balloon is part of a recent batch launched from North Korea on Wednesday, which consisted mostly of paper and plastic waste, with no dangerous materials detected.
North Korea has a history of deploying inflatables filled with various types of waste, including fecal matter, in retaliation against balloons carrying propaganda from the South.
This marks the second instance of such a balloon reaching the Seoul government complex. Earlier in May, during the onset of the trash balloon initiative, a foul inflatable was retrieved from the complex's roof. In June, another balloon was located on the grounds of South Korea’s presidential office.
