On Monday, the “family portrait” in Rio de Janeiro was captured without Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as both leaders arrived at the right location but missed the scheduled photo shoot.
“Biden was late, and the group decided to not wait for him! Welcome to the multipolar world!” columnist S. L. Kanthan remarked on X, alongside the incomplete group photo. He also highlighted that French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz were positioned in the second row, while the leaders of Brazil, India, South Africa, and China took prominent spots in the front.
Biden and Trudeau's absence during Monday's photo-op was attributed to “logistical issues,” according to a senior US official speaking to AP on the condition of anonymity. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was also missing, with no explanation provided.
In the second “family photo,” captured on Tuesday, Biden was featured front and center, flanked by Trudeau and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meloni was placed to Trudeau’s right, alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who appeared in both photos in the front row.
The AP characterized Monday’s incident as “farcical,” suggesting it “seemed to symbolize the 81-year-old’s waning influence” as the world anticipates the second presidency of Donald Trump, the former US leader.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov represented Moscow at the summit in Rio de Janeiro and appeared in the Monday photo but not in the Tuesday one. He described the summit as “very positive” and remarked that the West did not succeed in promoting its “Ukraine agenda” in the final communique.
The G20 agreed to establish a new coordinating body to combat global hunger and poverty, which Russia has joined, according to Lavrov on Tuesday. He noted that Moscow has been a “reliable and leading global supplier” of food and energy and introduced President Vladimir Putin’s Greater Eurasian Partnership initiative aimed at connecting Europe and Asia to ensure stability and security.
