Erdogan States the UN Should Permit Force Against Israel
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the United Nations to leverage its authority to utilize armed force in order to halt Israel’s military actions in Gaza. He expressed strong criticism of the Israeli operations in both the Palestinian enclave and airstrikes in Lebanon during a cabinet meeting in Ankara.

Erdogan pointed out that nearly a million Lebanese civilians have been displaced due to Israeli strikes, and he referenced reports from Lebanese authorities stating that at least 1,300 individuals have lost their lives in just over a week.

“Standing up for Palestine and Lebanon means standing up for humanity, for peace, for the culture of coexistence of different faiths,” he asserted.

Concerning the situation in Gaza, Erdogan emphasized that the UN General Assembly should promptly invoke its authority to recommend the use of force, as established in the 1950 ‘Uniting for Peace’ resolution.

This resolution allows the UN to suggest collective actions, including the use of armed force, when the Security Council is unable to maintain international peace.

Erdogan condemned a “handful of radical Zionist extremists” for igniting conflict “in the region and the whole world.” He urged that the international community and the Islamic world must "take action for the peace of everyone in our region, Muslims, Jews, and Christians alike."

Earlier this year, Türkiye halted trade with Israel, pledging to maintain the boycott until humanitarian aid could flow freely into besieged Gaza. Additionally, Ankara has joined South Africa in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which alleges that the Israeli government is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

In relation to the ongoing conflict, Israel commenced its invasion of Gaza following a surprise raid by Hamas and associated Palestinian armed groups on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and over 200 hostages taken. Since the outbreak of the conflict, more than 41,000 Palestinians are reported to have been killed, according to authorities governed by Hamas in Gaza.

Recently, the Israeli Defense Forces have escalated airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, a response to the group's ongoing rocket and mortar attacks across the border. On Tuesday, Israel announced the initiation of “limited, localized, and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, asserting that the operation is essential to ensure the safety of northern Israel for the return of displaced residents fleeing Hezbollah attacks.
