A shooter killed at least two individuals and injured seven others before taking his own life at a Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, according to police reports.
The tragic event unfolded at Abundant Life Christian School, a private establishment serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The assailant, identified as a student at the school, began firing shortly before 11 a.m., Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes informed reporters. Two people were killed on the spot, while seven others sustained injuries, Barnes noted.
As law enforcement arrived on the scene to intervene, the shooter, whose identity has not yet been released, fatally shot himself.
Footage from outside the school captured a significant presence of police and emergency vehicles responding to the crisis.
"We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed in a statement.
This incident occurred just six months after police shot and killed a 14-year-old who attempted to break into a middle school in Mount Horeb, located about 20 kilometers from Madison. Prosecutors chose not to file charges against the two officers involved, citing that the teen ignored repeated demands to drop a realistic-looking air rifle he was holding.
