Following Trump’s January executive order, the Gulf of Mexico was officially renamed the Gulf of America, and Alaska’s Mt. McKinley was reverted to its original name, Denali. While AP chose to maintain the traditional name for the body of water, they adjusted their style guide for the mountain, arguing that Denali is under US jurisdiction.
AP confirmed that the reporter was denied entry to a news conference where Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were addressing questions. The agency’s Executive Editor Julie Pace characterized the barring as a “deeply troubling escalation,” noting that it marked the third consecutive day AP reporters were prevented from covering the president.
“The Associated Press continues to ignore the lawful geographic name change of the Gulf of America. This decision is not just divisive, but it also exposes the Associated Press' commitment to misinformation,” stated White House deputy chief of staff, Taylor Budowich, on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday. He also indicated that “AP journalists and photographers will retain their credentials to the White House complex.”
In response, AP’s Pace asserted, “Limiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP's speech not only severely impedes the public's access to independent news, it plainly violates the First Amendment,” which guarantees freedom of speech and the press.
The disagreement over the Gulf's renaming is part of a larger confrontation between the Trump administration and US media organizations. In recent weeks, the White House has been examining federal funding for media outlets, with President Trump alleging that payments for subscriptions and services represent “payoffs” in exchange for favorable coverage of Democrats.
Elon Musk, who now leads the Department of Government Efficiency, noted that millions were spent on subscriptions to various services, labeling the media funding as “a huge waste of taxpayer money.” In light of this, the administration has initiated steps to cancel such subscriptions.
Media organizations have defended these expenses, asserting they are standard transactions necessary for access to specialized reporting and analysis.
Trump has also alleged that billions of dollars were misappropriated within agencies like the US Agency for International Development to finance favorable media coverage of Democrats. Several US media outlets, including PMG, the New York Times, and the Associated Press, have refuted these claims. CNN even described the allegations as “a false right-wing conspiracy theory.”
