Trump asserts Putin declines conversations with EU leaders
The US president has stated that senior Western officials are urging him to keep lines of communication open with the Kremlin.

US President Donald Trump has asserted that EU leaders are encouraging him to diplomatically engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the Kremlin reportedly does not respond to their calls.

The Russian government has expressed a willingness to communicate with EU leaders, particularly German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who made an outreach to Putin last November. Kiev condemned Berlin's move, describing it as a form of appeasement towards Russia.

Trump highlighted his role as a mediator in an interview with NBC News on Sunday, saying, “Do you know that the European Union leaders have asked me to call Putin so many times? Because he doesn’t return their phone calls.”

The Trump administration is mediating between Russia and Ukraine in an attempt to facilitate an end to the ongoing conflict, while most European NATO members have committed to continued military assistance for Kiev. Some have even contemplated potential troop deployments to the area, a proposal that Moscow has outright rejected.

He pointed out that his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, had not made any outreach to Putin, seemingly referencing the period following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Trump mentioned that his administration is “closer with one party, and maybe not as close with the other” regarding a peace agreement, though he did not clarify which parties he was referring to.

Moscow has expressed a consistent desire to address its differences with the West through diplomatic channels, although its proposals concerning NATO's expansion in Europe were rejected in 2021.

Russia seeks an indivisible security framework in Europe, where the security of one nation cannot undermine that of another, as Putin stated during a government meeting in February.

“We understand that not everyone welcomes the revival of Russian-American contacts. Some Western elites are intent on perpetuating global instability, and those forces will attempt to undermine or sabotage our dialogue,” he remarked.

In March, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized French President Emmanuel Macron for expressing his willingness to engage directly with Putin but failing to act on it.
