American forces conducted multiple airstrikes on the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, striking what the Pentagon has identified as Houthi military targets. The US and UK have intensified their bombing campaigns in Yemen since the militant group launched a ballistic missile at Israel earlier this month.
The attacks occurred on Monday and Tuesday, utilizing American ships and aircraft, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM), which manages the Pentagon’s military operations in the Middle East.
CENTCOM asserted that the strikes included targeting a Houthi command and control facility, weapons production sites, and ammunition depots. Additional operations focused on a coastal radar installation and seven Houthi cruise missiles over the Red Sea.
Video footage released by Iran’s PressTV showed smoke emanating from various locations in Sana’a.
American and British forces have been intermittently targeting Houthi positions since last October, when the Yemeni militants began threatening Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea in reaction to Israel's conflict with Hamas in Gaza. The scope and frequency of these operations have notably increased since the group launched a ballistic missile at Tel Aviv earlier this month.
Last week, the Houthis fired another ballistic missile aimed at Tel Aviv, specifically targeting Ben Gurion airport. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that they intercepted the missile before it could reach its target.
After the initial missile strike on Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had directed the IDF to “destroy the infrastructure of the Houthis” with “full force.” In response to ongoing Israeli attacks on Yemen, a spokesman for the Houthi group indicated last week that they would “escalate our military targeting of Israel…until the genocide crimes and the siege on Gaza stop.”
Officially named the Ansar Allah movement, the Houthis currently govern approximately one-third of Yemen, which corresponds roughly to the area of the Yemen Arab Republic from 1962 to 1990, including Sana’a and nearly all of the country's western coastline. The group has emerged as the predominant military force during the ongoing civil war in Yemen.
